  • Dolby. Major changes took place in the company, with Ray Dolby stepping down as Chairman, and CEO Bill Jasper announcing his retirement.
  • Paramount’s VPF offer. System integrators are not only unhappy, but the public nature of the offer is causing problems overseas. The jury is out as to whether Paramount’s action is helping to install more 3-D screens, or hurting it.
  • Texas Instruments retracts 3-D license for Series 1 projectors, but continues with plans to license 3-D for Series 2.
  • NATO members to meet with TI in March.
  • CBG’s Wayne Anderson will retire from the buying group in March.
  • European deployment entity Arts Alliance signs up self-organized independents in The Netherlands.
  • Disney posts first exhibitor-oriented site for digital cinema.
  • SMPTE working groups met in February. Changes proposed to 430-6 Auditorium Security Messages (ASM) were presented, which was only published last June, and progress reported on the CSP/RPL protocol for closed captions.
  • DCIP. Cinemark provided no hint as to progress on financing negotiations.
  • ISDCF plans the industry’s first open 3-D luminance test Tuesday, March 24, in Burbank.
  • Technicolor adds Grass Valley, PRN, and its stake in Screenvision to its for-sale list.

TI retracted its intent to license the 3-D capability of its installed base of Series 1 projectors. Nancy Fares, Business Manager for DLP Cinema, claimed the intent to license was misrepresented. Cinema Buying Group (CBG)

Wayne Anderson, the volunteer Managing Director for Cinema Buying Group (CBG), will step down in March. Taking his place will be Bill Campbell, owner of the seven screen Orpheum Theatre in Wyoming. Bill has been an active leader within NATO over the years, and has been working alongside Wayne in recent months.

Europe

Eyeing the opportunity to deliver a wide variety of regional products to its theatre clients, a Netherlands film booker pulled together a group of 68 independent cinemas in a deal with deployment entity Arts Alliance Media. This is the first “CBG” like deal to take place outside of the US.
